Director’s House

Several requests formed the foundation of the project: wood ceilings, authentic cork flooring, and exposed track lighting. The challenge was to bring these elements together in a way that felt cohesive and contemporary while honouring the spirit of the original inspiration. The project relies on a few carefully considered elements rather than decorative gestures. Hickory was selected as the primary millwork material for its visual resemblance to teak, a wood commonly associated with mid-century interiors. Particular attention was paid to the veneer selection, with wide flitches specified to showcase large cathedral grain patterns rather than smaller, more uniform figuring. This approach recalls the expressive wood surfaces found in many modernist interiors and furniture pieces of the era. The hickory was used extensively throughout the main floor and primary suite, creating a sense of warmth, continuity, and permanence throughout the home.

A hickory slat screen at the stair acts as both divider and focal point, filtering light and views while reinforcing the home’s strong rhythm of vertical lines and natural materials. Track lighting was used throughout the home, providing flexibility while reinforcing the informal and creative atmosphere that inspired the project. Richly textured wool drapery softens the interior and adds warmth, depth, and acoustic comfort.

Together, the wood ceilings, cork flooring, hickory millwork, and textured wool create a warm and tactile interior defined by simplicity, rhythm, and material expression. Against this restrained backdrop, sculptural furnishings, artwork, and moments of colour bring personality and playfulness to the space. The result is a home that feels relaxed, creative, and deeply personal.
